IOL Implants

An intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted after removal of the natural crystalline lens during cataract surgery. IOLs are made of acrylic, silicone, or other biocompatible materials. Some lenses include coatings that protect against UV and blue light.

IOL power is calculated based on eye parameters such as axial length, corneal curvature, and corneal astigmatism. Patients are offered the most suitable IOL option based on ocular measurements and visual needs.

Types of IOLs:

  • Monofocal IOL: provides clear distance or near vision. Commonly used for clear distance vision, patients would need glasses for near work.
  • Multifocal / Trifocal IOL: provide clear distance as well as near vision hence reducing dependency on glasses after surgery.
  • Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOL: similar to multifocal IOL, these EDOF lenses have a large corrective zone which covers distance as well as some near vision as well.
  • Toric IOL: used to correct pre-existing cyclindrical power in patients with astigmatism
